A Successful Recovery After a Boat Theft and Wrongfully Denied Claim
Sometimes, a lawyer takes a case that does not seem that unusual or significant, only to learn of factors that turn it into a real passion. This happened to me in the mid-1990s, when I met a young man who had fallen victim to boat theft.
The boat was found burned in Monroe, Michigan, and my client filed an insurance claim. His insurance company denied that claim — saying they believed he had burned his own boat to collect money from them.
This made no sense to me, based on any of the circumstances I saw and the young man was adamant about not being involved. He loved the boat and it was given to him by his father. I believed him. We built our case and a jury awarded my client the full value of the boat, and attached my attorney's fees, several times the value of the boat, to what the insurance company was required to pay.
Since then, I have successfully handled several stolen car/claim denial cases, and found the outcomes rewarding and satisfying, in part because the claim denials were so unfair and these clients really needed strong representation.
A Proven Trial Attorney Can Make a Difference for You
My career as an attorney is built on strong trial work — and these cases go to trial. Once your insurance company denies your stolen car or boat theft claim, they will almost certainly stick to their guns. If we disprove their suspicions or "case" against you, it strikes a small blow for insurance consumers everywhere.
An attorney for the insurance company may try any number of methods and arguments, but I have proven strategies of my own to answer claims such as:
- The car had an anti-theft system.
- The car, when recovered, showed no evidence of being started with anything but a key.
- Your financial situation "proves" that you were desperate enough to stage a theft or burn your own car.
